Saturday 3 September, afternoon excursions:

1. The Pausilypon Archeological park

Duration: 2 hours. Price: €20

The archaeological and nature reserve of Pausilypon includes the ruins of Publio Vedio Pollio’s villa whose underwater remains are found in the Underwater Park of Gaiola.

The gateway to this area is through the monumental Seiano’s cave, a 770 meters long tunnel dug out through the Posillipo hillside. The villa was built by the rich Roman knight Publio Vedio Pollio in the 1st century B.C. and when Pollio died (15 B.C.) it was bequeathed to the future emperor Augustus, becoming an official imperial estate.

 

2. Greek-Roman and Baroque Naples

Duration: 3-4 hours. Price: €38.

This excursion involves a walking tour of some of the most important monuments and churches in the historical centre of the city. It includes a visit of the churches of Gesù Nuovo, S. Chiara and its cloister, S. Lorenzo and the Greek-Roman market, the S. Severo Chapel, the Church of the Purgatorio ad Arco.

 

3. Underground Naples and the Greek-Roman theatre

Duration: 2 hours. Price: €20

This excursion involves descending 40 meters below the Naples Historical Centre, into a labyrinth of caves, tunnels, and passageways, for a two hour stroll through one of the more than 150 cavities burrowed into the earth.

Originally built as mines for stone to construct the buildings that stand in the city above, they have since been used as cult sites, catacombs, secret meeting places, and even shelter during World War II. The visit also includes enormous cisterns that were part of the Roman aqueduct system and the remains of a Greco-Roman theatre (http://www.napolisotterranea.org/en/naples-underground/).

 

4. Herculaneum

Duration: 3-4 hours. Price: €47

1. Amalfi and Ravello
